On May 13,1665,  ninth guru of Sikhs Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib founded the place Anandpur
Sahib. Guruji went to state Bilaspur to attend the wailing for raja dip chand. Rani Champa
offered to give the guru a piece of land. The guru bought this on payment of 500 rupees.
Here on the hill of makhowal Guru Ji raised a new holy home. On June 19, 1665, the ground
was broken by baba gurditta ji. After guru ji’s mother (Mata Nanki ji), the village was named
as “CHAKK NANAKI”. Chakk nanaki place later came to be known as "ANANDPUR SAHIB".

History Of Five Forts Of Anandpur Sahib

Tenth Sikh Guru Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji made five forts on the border of the city to
prevent it from the external invasions. The five forts were:

Qila Anandgarh Sahib(fort of bliss)- The main fort, after which the city was also named
Anandpur Sahib. It is situated in the middle of Anandpur Sahib and is about eight hundred
meters southeast of Takht Shri Kesgarh Sahib.

Qila Holgarh Sahib(fort of color) - Also known as Agamgarh. It was built for the celebration
of hola mohalla.

Qila Lohgarh Sahib(fort of steel) - It was the second strongest fort. In this fort
the arms and ammunition were manufactured. Mound armies attacked Anandpur Sahib many
times but they hesitated to attack this fort out of fear that means its gate could not be broken.
It is situated at one and a half kilometer southwest of gurudwara Shri Kesgarh Sahib.

Qila Fatehgarh Sahib(fort of victory) - When this fort was being built, Sahibzada Fateh singh
Ji ( youngest son of Guru Gobind Singh Ji) was born. Hence it was named “Qila Fategarh Sahib” in
his honour. It is situated on the northern outskirts of Anandpur. This fort reminds us of struggle
between Mughals and Khalsa army.

Qila Taragarh Sahib- 'Taragarh is situated five km from Shri Anandpur Sahib. Qila was built to stop the mound armies from reaching to Anandpur Sahib.
